Mission and Service

"I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me."

And they asked, "When did we do these things?"

"Just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me."

At Highland Presbyterian Church, mission and community service have always been among our highest priorities. Many of our members have chosen Highland Pres because of this commitment to be a serving congregation. We are actively engaged in person to person mission and we support other community service programs through our mission budget.

Here are some of the programs you are invited to become involved with:

Atkinson Reading Program
Highland Presbyterian members team with volunteers from West Chestnut Street Baptist Church to read with and relate to at least one child per week over the school year at Atkinson Elementary School.
Holiday Hope Fund
You are invited to contribute monetary gifts to support the purchase of food cards and turkeys for needy families for the hlolidays.
Habitat for Humanity
Our members annually work on the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house in Louisville.
Refugee Sponsorship
Over the years we have helped sponsor many refugee families. Our most recent is a family of seven from Somalia. We work in partnership with Kentucky Refugee Ministries which is housed in our facilities and grew out of the concern of church members. It is now a thriving interfaith program.
Thanksgiving Baskets
We have had the privilege of providing Thanksgiving Baskets for over 50 families a year through the Highlands Community Ministries. Contributions of food and money are solicited from the congregation, as well as volunteers to deliver the baskets.
Adult Mission Trips
These trips provide an opportunity for our adult members to travel to an area of human need to work with the local people to improve their quality of life. These trips are in other parts of our country or abroad.
Youth Mission Trips
Every summer the High School Youth Group completes a work trip to an area of need in the United States. These trips provide help to others and are often a life-changing experience for our young people.

Other Volunteer Services

We encourage our members to get involved in other community agencies. Many of our people serve as volunteers in agencies, such as the Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Presbyterian Community Center, Highlands Community Ministries, and the Cabbage Patch Settlement House.
